What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Pelvic physiotherapy is a manual therapy technique designed to assess and rehabilitate the pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles located between the tailbone and pubic bone and may be the source of many different pelvic-related dysfunctions. These dysfunctions can include pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, and pelvic pain.

Your therapist will assess the pelvic floor by performing either an internal or external examination of the area and provide appropriate massage techniques, exercises, and strengthening depending on your condition.

Please note that internal assessments are not mandatory and that you can revoke consent for an internal assessment at any point throughout the session.

  • The patient will have to take off underwear if they are having an internal exam but they will be properly draped with sanitary products
  • Lubricant is used and gloves are used
  • Private room only

Frequently Asked Questions About Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Find answers to the most common questions our patients ask about visiting a pelvic floor physiotherapist

Yes! Pelvic physiotherapy can help with symptoms related to pregnancy such as weakness in the pelvic floor, incontinence, and pain. It is completely safe to get treatment while pregnant if all contraindications are ruled out.

Yes! Often times peeing while exercising actually means your pelvic floor may have increased tone. This means you may benefit from relaxation techniques, pelvic massage, and transitioning to gradual pelvic strengthening.

No. The internal examination is to help the practitioner get a better sense of the tone of the muscles, and tender points as well as for cueing techniques during pelvic floor strengthening. However, external examinations can help as well with pelvic floor dysfunctions.

Those suffering from:

  • Urinary incontinence: involuntary loss of urine (while exercising, while trying to rush to the bathroom, in the middle of the night)
  • Overactive bladder (peeing more than 5-8 times per day)
  • Pelvic pain or pain with intercourse
  • Prepartum and postpartum women (especially those with associated lower back pain)
  • Coccyx or tailbone pain
  • Painful urination
  • Fecal incontinence

No! There is a common misconception that after pregnancy, the pelvic floor is supposed to become weak and it is something you have to deal with as you age. This is NOT true. Your pelvic floor should be strong enough to support you and your bladder, especially after birth and this is something you and your therapist can work towards.

Sarah singularly treats those who identify as Assigned Female at Birth.
