When you’re stressed or in pain for an extended period of time you actually can develop dysfunctional breathing. During heightened periods of stress we tend to take irregular and shallow breaths which reduce the amount of oxygen we’re taking in.

This happens because of our sympathetic nervous system which is the fight or flight response. Deep breathing activate your parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for our rest and digest response.

Your parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system can’t be on at the same time so activating your parasympathetic system with deep breathing it can help calm your brain and anxiety.

You can use different breathing techniques to get different results, like calming yourself or boosting your energy!

The calming technique is called Box Breathing or 5x5x5x5 breathing.

To try it yourself start by

  • taking a breath in for 5 seconds,
  • holding it for 5 seconds,
  • breathing out for 5 seconds
  • holding again for 5 seconds

Each breath should take about 20 seconds and it’s recommended you do 6 breaths for a total of 2 minutes. This can help lower blood pressure, reduce your stress and cortisol levels to allow you to relax.
