The second half of your life can bring some of the most rewarding decades. You may be more confident than your younger self, you gain wisdom and patience. But we want to share the secret to growing older with your mind and body as healthy as possible.

Here’s Dr. Rob with the #1 secret to healthy aging:

Like Dr. Rob said, the #1 predictor of healthy aging is muscle mass and #2 is muscle strength! So why not start building muscle today. Having more muscle mass can help with energy, balance, and feeling good as you age. The point isn’t to look like you could walk into a fitness competition tomorrow, it’s about building functional muscle!

Here’s how strength training can help you age well:

Improved Heart Health

Lifting weights 1x per week has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke by 40-70 percent! Evern simple body weight exercises like squats, lunges, and pushups had the same effect.

It Changes Your Body at a Cellular Level

When your muscles grow and get stronger our bodies produce more mitochondria to keep up with the new energy demands. Mitochondria are the energy makers in every cell in our body. When you have more mitochondria you feel better and have more energy. One of the main things we hear from our FitClub members is that they have so much more energy after they start working out consistently.

It Reduces Your Risk of Falls

While you might not be thinking about falls now, they’re one of biggest health risks for older adults. Having more muscle mass and strength can help improve balance to prevent falls in the first place.

It Improves Bone Health

Resistance training not only strengthens your muscles, it strengthens your bones! Just like lifting weights makes your muscles bigger it makes your bones thicker. This extra bone mass can help prevent the progression of osteoporosis or osteopenia which are diseases of the bones. The good news is that no matter what your age, it’s never too late to start building muscle! Your body has the capability to adapt to exercise and get stronger at any age. Your future self will thank you!

If you’re inspired to start resistance training but you’re not sure where to start, the FitClub is the perfect place for you.

We have an amazing physiotherapy based exercise program at the FitClub where a physiotherapist will assess you and walk you through exercises tailored specifically to you. If you’re interested, call or book at the top of the page to get started today!
