What Beer Can Teach Us About Making New Year's Resolutions

What are your new year’s resolutions?

The most common ones are:

  • Exercise more
  • Lose weight
  • Get organized
  • Learn a new skill or hobby
  • Live life to the fullest
  • Save more money / spend less money
  • Quit smoking
  • Spend more time with family and friends

… the list goes on and you might recognize some of these as your own resolutions.

We’re already a week into 2021, so how are your resolutions holding up? Dr. Rob wants to show you how a beer company’s motto may change your thinking on your long list of changes to make in 2021.

Steam Whistles motto is “Do one thing really, really well”.

Like Dr. Rob mentioned, some of us tend to go crazy and make a ton of resolutions BUT this could actually be setting yourself up for failure trying to make big changes all at once.

Instead, by picking ONE resolution you’re much more likely to stick to it. So how can you reach your goals this year?

Use the Goal Snowball

How the Fit Club approaches goals uses the Goal Snowball method. This method is based on science that found if you try to achieve one goal you have an 80% chance of achieving it, if you try to achieve 2 goals at once you have a 30% chance of achieving those goals and if you try 3 goals the success rate is virtually 0%… not very promising odds!

So focus on the ONE resolution you really want to achieve this year and work on it until it becomes a habit. Once you’ve achieved the first goal then start incorporating your second goal.

Automate Them

Habits are habits because we don’t have to think about them. Most of your day is spent in autopilot where you’re not consciously thinking about what you’re doing like brushing your teeth, making breakfast, driving to get groceries because they’re habits.

To make something new into a habit it takes about 66 days for the average person, but it can also take as little as 18 days or as long as 254 days depending on the person. Incorporate your goals into your daily routine so that over time it becomes a habit and you don’t have to consciously think about it.

Cue Yourself

Out of sight out of mind is all too real for many of us. Sometimes we need external cues to remind us of our goals. If you want to drink more water, try setting an alarm on your phone a few times a day, if you want to exercise more, lay out your workout clothes so they’re the first thing you see in the morning, or write your goal in block letters on the fridge as a reminder.

Whatever you need to do to keep that goal at the front of your mind so you can create a lifelong habit!

We at PRICE want you to have the best year ever in 2021 by inspiring you to invest in yourself and invest in your health. Stay tuned for next week’s 2 minute tip for more advice on how to reach your goals this year!
